The Gorges: a canyon of volcanic origin
Alcantara Gorges in Motta Camastra (ME), are two volcanic basalt walls as high as 50 meters included in the beautiful natural setting of the homonymous Botanic Park and Geo.
The river flows for about 52 km passing by the imposing Mount Etna, the Nebrodi mountains and flows into the Ionian Sea. The Greeks called it Assinos, Pliny named him Asines, Appiano Onobalas Alexandria, Al Qantarah Muslims (which means “arch bridge”).
